FRESH FACE:

DINGO!

D OM ACI

not long after derrick and
warren clark moved to Philadelphia
from Austin, Texas in 2009, they began
looking for a home in the area. During a
visit to Bethlehem around Christmastime,
they were captivated by the city's unique
charm. "It's proven to be one of the best
decisions we've ever made," Warren says,
"next to adopting our pal Dingo!"
Warren had been in retail all his adult
life-getting into the furniture industry 15
years ago-and he loved it. Derrick had been
involved in nonprofit management, including
theaters in Austin, Bucks County, and the
Moravian Historical Society in Nazareth,
managing their operations. With their new
venture, Domaci, Derrick manages the day
to day operations, while Warren handles
product curating and store design.

The Clarks work directly with small
factories in India that are owned by
multi-generational furniture makers.
This not only ensures that they can bring
handcrafted and sustainably sourced
products to Bethlehem, but enables them
to simultaneously improve people's lives.
The factories mix people from different
caste systems-giving them opportunities
where they wouldn't normally exist.
"All of our woods are certified ecofriendly, reclaimed woods," Derrick says.
"We work a lot with plantation-grown
woods like mango, which is comparable to
cherry and mahogany, but it's sustainable
and renewable." In the past, when these
trees stopped producing fruit, they would
just burn them; now the factories harvest
the lumber to make beautiful furniture.

"We call it heirloom quality," Warren
says, "furniture you'll be able to pass
down to the next generation."
In addition to providing quality,
sustainable vintage and found goods,
the Clarks plan on hosting regular events
that celebrate the best of Bethlehem.
For example, they will be hosting the
Bethlehem Food Co-Op mixer this coming
August where they'll be serving mango
margaritas, of course, and monthly events
like Domaci Makers where local artisans
can showcase their goods.
