Jeff Vaclavik, Owner

GIVING BACK:

D EJA BREW

when jeff vaclavik gave a speech
for an award he won from the Bethlehem
Fine Arts Commission a few years ago,
he talked about the different experiences
his son has had growing up in Bethlehem
versus where Jeff grew up in the coal
country of Nesquehoning.
"It was a great place and time to grow
up," Jeff says, "but as far as the arts go,
there was absolutely nothing. You didn't
walk into every other store and have art
on the walls like you do here."
Jeff and his wife, Georgeann, moved
from Nesquehoning to Bethlehem 23
years ago and opened Deja Brew, a cafe
that's a testament to the art-filled walls
he mentioned in his acceptance speech.

For the past 21 years, Jeff has featured
the work of local artists and other
authentic memorabilia in his store.
Jeff is also one of the founders of the
SouthSide Film Festival, which just
celebrated its thirteenth year. The festival
has featured over 1,200 independent
films from 46 states and 78 countries
since its inception. Deja Brew is HQ for
the film festival's board, and their mission
is not just promoting independent films
but also contributing to the culture of
Bethlehem's South Side, which has been
undergoing something of a renaissance
in recent years.
"This year we're doing something called
Flash Your Pass," Jeff says, "where

anyone wearing a lanyard pass can
receive discounts at local participating
merchants, while they go between film
venues-the Lehigh Valley Charter High
School for the Arts, the Sinclair Lab
Auditorium at Lehigh University, and
Victory Firehouse."
Jeff concluded that speech by saying,
"My son, Brady, was literally in my wife's
belly during the first Film Festival. He's
literally grown up surrounded by art.
Here you are giving us this award, but
look what the arts in Bethlehem have
done for our family!"
